Large and spacious pub next to the Journal Tyne Theatre on Westgate Road – about 500 yards from the Central Station. It’s also close to the St James metro station.
The pub is very traditional – wooden floors and panneling, but the central skylight makes it a light and airy pub. At the front of the pub there are some interesting seating areas, with stained glass and wooden dividers.
The pub belongs to the Sir John Fitzgerald real ale pub chain and there are 8 hand pumps on the bar – so a good choice. Many of the beers are locally brewed – regulars: Durham Magus 4 and Big Lamp Prince Bishop. These are supplemented by changing guests – some locale. They also carry Windsor and Eton beers regularly too, brewed many miles from Newcastle of course.
Cardboard two-pint takeaway containers are available but they are not strong enough to carry onto the train with your luggage – and no, I didn’t try. Fortunatley I had a spare plastic bottle.
Believe that food is available but I haven’t eaten here.
The pub shows football on big TVs and there is a real party atmosphere that builds whenever Newcastle are playing.
Excellent pub that I’d always want to go back to.
