Large, modern and spacious, city centre bar in the backstreets behind the Theatre Royal. Close to Monument Metro station.
The pub is all in wood – panneling and floor. It’s a bit like an old style cinema but actually is apparently designed to be like an ocean-going liner. Coming in off the street you are presented with the large central bar with the main seating areas in a horseshoe around it. At the back of the pub there are some more secluded seating areas. I expect that during the day the large picture windows at the front give the pub a light feel.
Bacchus has won CAMRA Tyneside Pub of the Year every year from 2009 – 2012 so you know you’re in the right place for some great beers. I visited Bacchus a number of times during my stay in Newcastle and my favourites were the Jarrow Rivet Catcher, Highland Scapa Special and Black Jack Brewery Double Bluff. But all the beers were well kept.
A more substantial food menu is available at lunchtine for office workers, with just pork pies in the evening. Didn’t try one though.
Part of the Sir John Fitzgerald chain of real ale pubs. A definite contender for the best pub in Newcastle, but there are many good ones to choose from.
