Newcastle upon Tyne

The City

The city of Newcastle is the largest conurbation within the county of Tyne and Wear. It has a long industrial and maritime history, with shipyards beside the Tyne. The city is based on an old Roman settlement. The city is now more focussed on culture and commerce as the older industries have dwindled.

Getting There

Newcastle has good transport links. The main station is a key stop on the East Coast Main Line (served by East Coast Trains and other companies) and there are frequent trains into Newcastle from Edinburgh to the north and York and London to the south.

Tyneside has an extensive metro system with lines pushing out into Gateshead, the suburbs, the coast and as far as Sunderland.

There is also a good bus service around the city.

Get Carter

some of you may know that the 1971 film Get Carter starring Michael Caine was predmoninantly shot around the Newcastle are (including into Gateshead, Hebburn and Wallsend). I’ve only visited a couple of the film locations but intend to try to see more on my next trip to the city.

If you’re interested in the filming locations see this YouTube video series about the Get Carter locations.

Eating in Newcastle

Haven’t eaten at many places, but the Pizza Express on Dean Street was good – if you like that sort of thing.

Staying in Newcastle

I found the Premier Inn, Newcastle Central (New Bridge Street West) was very good, and very reasonably priced.
