Canal-side Beefeater pub (and hotel) about a mile west of Woking town centre. Some parts of the building are obviously fairly old.
The location beside the Basingstoke canal is superb and there is a beer garden in front of the pub for days when the sun does shine.
Inside there is a mixture of old beams with more modern fittings and furniture. Watch your head on the way to the toilets if you’re tall as the ceiling does get gradually lower. The bar is ‘L’ shaped and faces you as you come through the main door. Seating areas are provided on both sides.
There is a restaurant upstairs for which I believe booking is a good idea. It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten here.
There are two hand pumps on the bar – serving Doom Bar (what else?) and Wychwood Hobgoblin. The Doom Bar may be everywhere these days but it tasted fine on my last visit to the Bridge Barn.
The staff seem fairly efficient but there never seems to be enough of them, so it can take a while to get served. At busy times, the plates and glasses can pile up on the tables outside.
There is a kids playground – more sensibly sited in the beer garden than across the car park like it used to be.
