Buried in the suburban streets of South Wimbledon, the Sultan is a large two-roomed mid 20th century pub.
The right-hand room as you enter gets most use and has a friendly locals vibe. Pub games are much in evidence and it’s a good place to learn a new game of dominoes. I’ve never been in the left-hand room and it seems seldom open.
The Sultan’s interest to real ale drinkers is that it is operated by the Hop Back Brewery of Downton near Salisbury. The pub carries a good selection of Hop Back beers including the well known Summer Lightning and the cask version of Entire Stout. On Wednesday evenings there is a promotion and the real ales are sold at a very reasonable price.
Food has not been available on my last few visits.
For sunny afternoons and evenings there is a garden outside.
It’s location means it can be tricky to get to but a visit to the Sultan can be combined with a trip to the nearby Trafalgar for a great evening of real ales.
