Old Thameside Inn

Large Nicholson’s pub by the river and close to Southwark Cathedral. The replica of Drake’s Golden Hinde floats in a dock next to the pub and the old Clink prison once existed round the corner.
As you enter the pub the bar stretches off to the left. The seating area is to the right and there are doors which open out onto the large riverside terrace. Elements of the pub look old and the building was once an old warehouse. But really it’s just the ground floor of an office block.
The terrace (visible from London Bridge) is what sells this pub and it’s not surprising to find it’s popular with both the tourist market and local office workers.
Some years ago I gave up coming to the Old Thameside Inn because of the poor beer choices and quality. Given the uplift in many other Nicholson’s pubs in London I thought I should give it another chance. I’d like to relate that the beer selection has improved but actually the only real ale available from approx 10 hand pumps on my last visit was Fullers London Pride. No sign of the superb collection trumpeted about on the Nicholson’s website.
With the excellent Rake and Market Porter just around the corner it’s not surprising that my visits to the Old Thameside Inn have been rare. The Golden Hinde outside is picturesque though.
