Horniman at Hays, London Bridge

Horniman at Hays, London Bridge

Large modern Nicholson’s pub rigyht on the River Thames at Hays Galleria near London Bridge.

The building is fairly new – dating from when Hays Wharf was redeveloped in the late 80s, but Nicholson’s have tried to make it look older. As you enter from the river embankment be careful of the steps down to the bar area – especially if in stagger mode.

The main seating area off to one side is at this lower level but there are a few tables by the windows at embankment level plus a dining area up in the balcony.

Years ago the real ale selection at the Horniman wasn’t that good. But in common with many other Nicholson’s pubs the beer selection has been expanded to feature some interesting and uncommon beers – including a Thornbridge beer brewed especially for Nicholson’s on my last visit. At least 6 different beers were available that day.

The pub always seems popular – both with tourists and local office workers. It can sometimes take a while to get served here if there aren’t enough staff on. The riverside seating area is covered by huge umbrellas – which is great since it always seems to rain when I visit.

Food is available from the standard Nicholson’s menu but it’s some years since I last ate here.

It’s definitely worth a visit now it’s improved – especially if you like the riverside setting and views of HMS Belfast moored nearby. It’s not a relaxing place for a drink though.

Definitely much improved and probably my favourite Nicholsons pub. I’ve had some amazing Thornbridge Kipling and Jaipur in there in recent months.

Was here the other day after another pub closed early.

Very friendly staff, amazing Ales and great food. Really enjoyed the Fish and Chips and my other half loved the Chicken Pie.

Would highly recommend this pub and the Brain’s SA Gold or Milkwood are a must try for anyone celebrating the Grand Slam!
