Shakespeare’s Head

Many pubs in the Angel/Clerkenwell area have become modern and trendy over the last few years. The Shakespeare’s Head is definitely not one of those and it appears to be stuck firmly in the 70s. It’s a backstreet local – situated behind Saddlers Wells theatre, so near to Angel tube station. It’s quite spacious inside with seating area in a ‘V’ shape around the bar.
Given it’s proximity to Saddlers Wells, The Shakespeare’s Head is a popular interval drinks venue and indeed you can order your interval drinks before the performance starts so they’re ready for you to collect. Posters from Saddlers Wells and signed autographs plaster the walls.
The real ale selection selection of Courage Best and Directors recalls a bygone era – as does the wooden panel decor.
Food (sandwiches and main courses) is available from lunchtime until 7:30pm on Mondays to Saturdays but I’ve never eaten here.
