The Charles Lamb at Angel
Hidden in the backstreets north of City Road and close to Angel tube station is the Charles Lamb – one of the nicest pubs in London. And I have to thanks the Boak and Bailey blog for alerting me to this one in 2009.
The Charles Lamb is tiny inside, with the main seating area clinging closely to the central bar. There is a more secluded room off to one side but this is reserved for diners. If the weather’s fine you can always congregate on the pavement outside with everyone else.
The beer selection is small in the Charles Lamb (3 hand pumps) but they are well-kept. Dark Star Hophead seems to be a regular but I have seen other beers as well.
The food menu has some interesting dishes. It may seem a bit pricey to some, but the food is good. A small selection of cold snacks are also available on the bar.
This pub is definitely worth a trip if you’re in the area and could be combined with a trip to the Wenlock Arms further east down City Road, or the Harlequin behind Saddlers Wells theatre.
