Hackney is not an area I visit very often, but when I do I always make time for a visit to the marvellous Pembury Tavern. It’s located on a busy road junction close to Hackney Downs station – so it’s easy to get to from Liverpool Street. And there seems to be a constant stream of buses passing

The building is large and imposing from the outside. I expect the inside was originally several different seperate rooms but these days it’s all one big open space. The decor is sparse and but there are plenty of tables to sit at, along with some more comfortable sofas at one end.

The bar is very long and boasts 16 hand pumps – most of which seem to be in use at any one time, mainly for beer but with one or two real ciders. Most of the beers are from the Milton Brewery near Cambridge with a couple of others. The Milton selection covers a wide range of styles and strengths. My favourite is usually the Spartan – a lighter hoppy beer, but if you like dark beers try the sweet and oaty Nero. All the beers I’ve drunk here have been kept well as the Pembury Tavern’s place in the Good Beer Guide seems well deserved.

Regular beer festivals are held at the Pembury Tavern when the already impressive selection of beers and ciders is significantly augmented. The racks for the casks are set up in the corner.

As well as all the drinking, the pub serves food from midday until 9pm. Pizza dominates the menu but there are other options. The food is popular and tastes very good. The Pembury Tavern also sells delicious pork scratchings – real stuff in a paper bag, not the synthetic variety.

There is Wi-Fi in the pub and some people seem to set up their office on the larger tables. You can also choose from an extensive selection of board games and a pool table.

Ther Pembury Tavern is a great pub – definitely worth a visit.

Nice pub. Quite near where I grew up, so a little nostalgia mixed in.
