The Brown Bear, Aldgate
The Brown Bear is located at the southern end of Leman Street – about 5 minutes walk from Aldgate East underground station. From the outside of the pub you can see the pub has history as a Taylor Walker pub.
The pub has a more traditional feel than some, with wooden floors and older style pub furniture. The bar is centrally positioned with seating areas to the left and right. You can imagine that the wtwo areas used to separate bars in the past. The right hand side of the pub extends back further to a more cosy seating area at the rear.
Two or three real ales are regularly available – chosen from an extended pubco selection so look out for some unusual choices. At one stage if you showed an interest in the real ale the staff would let you choose what beers they should order next but I’m not sure they still do that. The beer quality is generally pretty good in the Brown Bear but sometimes on very hot days the beer can suffer a bit.
Food is available at lunchtimes and in the evenings. The menu is extensive and includes many Thai options. The food is good, reasonably priced and the portions are big. See my post Aldgate Pub Lunch Options 5 – Brown Bear for a description of a lunch at the Brown Bear – including a photo of a Pad Thai.

Disappointing!
The staff were rude and very abrupt.
They could just about manage to be civil when taking your money.
I have to say I wouldn’t go back again.
