The Ship & Shovell, Charing Cross
The Ship and Shovell can be a bit tricky to find as it’s not on any obvious streets. But this pub nestles on the western side of Charing Cross mainline station in a small alleyway that passes beneath the station. It’s just a few yards from Heaven (the nightclub).
The pub has two rooms, and uniquely the two rooms are either side of the alley – effectively making it two separate pubs. The smaller bar is only open at busy times though.
The deep red exterior gives way to a traditionally wood and wallpaper interior that is livey, but cosy and friendly.
Badger beers are available here since this is a Hall & Woodhouse pub. Expect Badger Best, Tanglefoot and whatever the current seasonal beer is. Generally the beers are well kept and there is a good selection of the bottled Badger varieties too.
I’m afraid I don’t know if they serve food, but peanuts are available.
The pub is popular – like many pubs in the area and drinkers congregate outside on warmer evenings. But there’s usually somewhere to sit inside if you prefer that.
