The Rose & Crown is a very old pub in the St Michaels area – to the west of central St Albans and at the other end of Verulamium Park from the city centre.
Turn right as you come through the door and you’ll find a small cosy seating area with a bar and a dart board. Through the door to the left however is a much longer seating area where the pub has obviously been extended back at some stage. Through here is a pleasant beer garden.
The beams and other features display the age of the main part of the pub and there is a poster on the wall charting the pub’s history.
The beer selection is a mainly mainstream one but 4 beers were available on my last visit – including Greene King IPA, Sharps Doom Bar and Purity Mad Goose. The Mad Goose tasted a little tired but I was the only customer on this weekday lunch so maybe it hadn’t been pulled through properly.
Food is available lunchtimes and evenings and there is a good selection. The beef sandwich I had was very tasty.
The Rose & Crown is very close to the Six Bells and the St Michaels area is lucky to have two good friendly pubs.
