Small two bar pub on the western side of the centre of St Albans.
The Lower Red Lion has in the past had a very good reputation for real ales – even in a place like St Albans with many excellent real ale pubs. This has led to it being very popular on previous visits.
However the pub is now no longer in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and the praise for the quality of the beer and welcome has been scarce lately on various review sites. So I though I should check for myself whilst in the area.
A Monday lunchtime is perhaps not the best time to judge how crowded a pub gets, but there were six real ales available and 2 real ciders. The Chiltern Ale from Chiltern Brewery tasted fine so hopefully things are back on track for the pub again.
Not surprisingly the pub had few customers but it felt homely and despite being a local I was made to feel welcome. Food is available but I didn’t eat here.
The Lower Red Lion has events. There’s a quiz night every Wednesday and there are occasional beer festivals.
There is a beer garden out the back too.
