St Albans

St Albans is a city in Hertfordshire about 20 miles north of central London.

There was a settlement in the area before the Romans came and established their city of Verulamium. The name of St Albans comes from the legend that St Alban was beheaded there.

The dramatic cathedral (known also as the Abbey) was started during Norman times and is certainly worth a visit.

Getting to St Albans

St Albans is north of the M25 and east of the M1 motorways and is easily reached from either.

The main station at St Albans is on the main line out of London heading towards Sheffield and Nottingham, but is mainly served by First Capital Connect trains which operate between Bedford, Brighton, Sevenoaks and other southern destinations via London. The journey from London takes 20 – 30 minutes.

There’s also a smaller station just south of the centre of St Albans called St Albans Abbey. This is served by London Midland trains to Watford.
