The Old Vine can be found at the north-western corner of the cathedral grounds – close to the Eclipse pub and the centre of Winchester.
A few years ago the Old Vine used to be a scruffy chain pub that only really attracted visitors to the city who didn’t know where the better places were. But a couple of years ago it reinvented itself as a much more attractive food and drink venue.
As you enter through the main door there is a large restaurant area through the curtain to the left. On the right however is a more pubby bar with seating area where you can just go for a drink. Behind the bar area there is a small courtyard patio – perfect for summer evenings.
The selection of real ales seems to vary over my occasional visits to the Old Vine, but the beers always seem to be kept well. On a previous visit to Winchester, the Bowman’s Swift One was the best beer of the evening.
On my last visit I had a meal here and the food was superb – reasonably priced and good portions. Booking is advised in the restaurant as it gets full quickly.
Definitely one of the better bars in Winchester.
