Winchester
The City

Winchester Cathedral
Winchester is an old city approximately 60 miles south-west of London and 10 miles north of Southampton. Winchester landmarks include the Cathedral, the Great Hall with the round table, the city museum and the St Cross Hospital just south of the city out on the water meadows.
It has many fine pubs and is certainly a great place to visit – but I’m biased, as I used to live there.
Getting to Winchester
Winchester station is on the north-western corner of the main city centre and is well served by South West Trains services to London, Southampton and Portsmouth. There are also Cross Country Trains services calling at Winchester which operate between Bournemouth, Reading, Manchester and other destinations in the north.
The main bus station is at the western end of the High Street close to the statue of King Alfred and the Guildhall.

Eating in Winchester
If eating in one of the pubs does not tempt you, then I can recommend the Pizza Express in Bridge Street, which is right at the eastern end of the High Street. Try and get a table overlooking the river.
Staying in Winchester
If you’re looking for a comfortable Bed and Breakfast near the centre then I recommend Mrs Brett (Tel: 01962 861 450 / 07802 478 926). She’s just up the road from the Wykeham Arms.
