The sunken boat in the Exe at Topsham

Topsham is a lovely little town situated about 5 miles south of Exeter at the confluence of the River Exe and the River Clyst.

Topsham used to be one of the most important ports in the country as was for a long time the highest navigable point on the River Exe – until the Exeter Ship Canal was built.

The town has it’s fair share of good pubs – some in the picturesque Fore Street – others beside the river.

It’s easy to get to Topsham for a drink as the train and bus services from Exeter are good and the station is right in the town. Parking can be difficult in such a cramped old town though.

Topham has its own informative website.

You can locate the pubs on a map here.

Staying in Topsham

Reka Dom is an excellent B&B right by the southern tip of Topsham, near where the rivers meet. If you’re staying here try and get the tower room – the 360 degree views across the Exe and towards Exeter and Exmouth are superb. Reka Dom has a website
