Save the Wenlock Arms, Please
Published: Sep 26th, 2010 |
Rumours have doing the rounds for a while about the uncertainty surrounding the Wenlock Arms in Hoxton, London. Well now things are more certain and it appears there is a real risk that this superb pub will be sold to developers and demolished.
For those of you who don’t know it, the Wenlock is a tatty pub with sticky carpets and peeling paint. It is also one of the finest real ale pubs in the London area and one of the only remaining real boozers. Whilst other pubs have embraced food to a greater or lesser extent the Wenlock has stayed true to the door-step sandwich. Despite its tricky-to-find location there are always real ale fans making the pilgrimage to Wenlock Road.
If you care about pub heritage I urge you to visit the Save the Wenlock blog and/or Twitter at @savewenlockarms and get involved in the campaign to keep it open. There is also a Flickr group for the Wenlock campaign.
My review of the Wenlock is here.
Please pass this information on to anyone you think might be interested.
