Aldgate Lunchtime Options No2 – The Dispensary
Aug 17th, 2009 |
Number 2 in an occasional series of pubs I can visit at lunchtime. It follows on from my first ever post which concerned the Pride of Spitalfields.
The Dispensary is situated on the junction of Leman Street and Alie Street – just down the road from Aldgate East tube station. There used to be 3 pubs on this crossroads a few years ago. The Old Monk has now become a ‘gentlemans club’ and the Black Horse which reinvented itself as Bar Bed recently became a crime scene.

An Evening Out In Brighton
Jul 16th, 2009 |
Most of my beer drinking takes place in London after work or occasionally in Woking where I live. But just now and again it’s worth getting away somewhere different for an evening.
With a slightly earler departure from work and a bit of time invested on a train you can be in many interesting places. Using the discount available with an annual gold card is useful too.
Late last week it was Brighton’s turn and I’d like to share with you my mini pub crawl of 3 real ale pubs in the seaside city. The crawl doesn’t take you far from the station, and in fact nowhere near the sea but the sound of the seagulls will reassure you that it’s over there somewhere.

Pride of Spitalfields, E1
Jul 2nd, 2009 |
I returned to the Pride of Spitalfields in Heneage Street E1 for lunch on Tuesday for the first time in a few months. It’s just off Brick Lane – reasonably close to where I work, but not exactly round the corner.
Reassuringly nothing had changed in the intervening period – it’s still the same back street boozer that it always has been. Four handpumps were in use – ESB, London Pride, Doom Bar, and Brewers Gold. I’ve tried all of them in the past but favour the Crouch Vale Brewers Gold these days since it doesn’t interfere too much with work in the afternoon.
The menu is predominantly ‘greasy spoon’ caff, but the food is good and it comes quickly, which you don’t always get. It’s reasonably priced too – I had two pints and a plate full of food all for less than £9.00.
I won’t leave it as long before going back again.
