Late July run down of cheap beer deals to be found at Morrisons.

This late-July update was researched at the Woking Morrisons – a chaotic store at the moment with all the building work going on to extend the store. I can’t see the extension improving the beer and cider selection much though as it’s already better than some other Morrisons stores I’ve been in.

Brains SA at Morrisons

Anyway, quite a few reductions from the normal 500ml bottled beer price to report this month:

Shepherd Neame – Master Brew – £1.00

Wyre Piddle – Piddle in the Hole – £1.05

Brains – SA – £1.25

Brains – SA Gold – £1.25

Wells & Youngs – Banana Bread – £1.50

Jennings – Sneck Lifter – £1.50

There are also these 4 Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) beers – all at £1.49:

Golden Champion

Golden Glory

Fursty Ferret

Tanglefoot

All these prices are effective until 21st August 2011 according to the shelf labels.

No sign of the £1.00 Brewers Dark from J W Lees that’s been a cheap mainstay for some months. There’s no empty allocated space on the shelves so it’s not certain if that long-running offer has finished now. Perhaps the appearance of Master Brew at £1.00 is a signal there.

Alcohol Free

One other offer to mention this month is the 8 can fridge packs of Bavaria 0,0 alcohol free beer at £2.00 – that’s 25 pence a 330ml can. Non-alcoholic beers are not to everyone’s taste I know but this one is pretty good, especially straight out the fridge on a warm summer evening (if you get those where you live).

Unfortunately Morrisons don’t stock the Bavaria 0,0 Wit any more – a delicious and fruity non-alcoholic wheat beer. Looks like I’ll have to make a trip to the dreaded Tesco’s soon as my stocks are running low.

February's price deals from Morrisons on bottled beers. A slightly better selection this month.

A slightly better selection of price reductions this month including a seasonal that may still be available at your local Morrisons.

British Beer Bottles

Ringwood Boondoggle beer

Our old favourites – Wyre Piddle Piddle in the Hole and J W Lees Brewers Dark are both still available for £1.00 each for a 500ml bottle. As I mentioned before, Morrisons staff tell me that this offer will hold for the foreseeable future.

The other deals on 500ml bottles are:

Ringwood Boondoggle – £1.25

Brains SA – £1.25

Brains SA Gold – £1.25

Badger Golden Glory – £1.25

Badger Golden Champion – £1.29

All these offers are effective until February 27th according to the shelf labels.

Chinese (Style) Beer

Morrisons got in a load of Sun Lik to help its customer celebrate the recent Chinese New Year. I’d never heard of this one before and it’s labelled up as being made by San Miguel – the Spanish brand. The draught version (and yes I’ve not seen that either) is apparently brewed under license by Shepherd Neame in Kent.

I don’t think it sold well in Woking where my research was carried out, but what they have got left is priced at £1.00 a bottle. I’ve not tried it but it might be worth a go if you see it at your local supermarket. What does a Kentish/Spanish/Chinese beer taste like anyway?

See you.

A couple of new beers on special offer this month to go with the two regulars. And an update on good value canned beer for those of you who are happy to drink out of cans. Research carried out at Morrisons Woking.

Brains SA at Morrisons

Bottles

Wyre Piddle Piddle in the Hole and Lees Brewers Dark are both still £1.00 each for a 500ml bottle. I’m told these two will be this price for the foreseeable future.

The two new ones this month are Brains SA and a Christmas beer from White Horse Brewery called ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed White Horse’. Both of these beers are £1.25 for 500ml bottles.

One other beer on special was Adnams Broadside at £1.50 for 500ml – not a massive reduction though.

None of these price reductions has an end date on them though.

Cans

Reasonably priced can packs were:

Badger Tanglefoot – 4 x 500ml for £4.00

Marstons Pedigree – 4 x 500ml for £4.14

Thwaites Mild – 4 x 440ml for £2.56

I’ve not tried the Thwaites Mild before and I won’t be having it this month. I’m looking at the costs of the alcohol free beers at the moment and I’ll be posting more about that soon.

Anyone got any other different deals in your local Morrisons?

** Please note this post has been superseded by Morrisons Beer Offers – September Update **

Wychwood Hobgoblin has now joined the ranks of the £1 per bottle deals at our local Morrison’s. There are big empty gaps where some of the other beers in the offer were.

The Hobgoblin is a dark and malty bitter – on the strong side at 5.2%. I find the taste OK, but I wouldn’t want to drink a lot of it.

The Brains SA is not on special offer but I haven’t seen the ‘normal’ SA at Morrison’s before – they do normally carry the young upstart SA Gold. Mmm, perhaps someone made a mistake and ordered the wrong stuff…

Now I do have a soft spot for Brain’s beer having been at university in Cardiff many years ago so I leaped on this one. The aroma is unmistakably Brain’s but the lively nature of this bottled beer seems at odds with the smoother, subtler consistency of the draught version.

Before I get started on the Winchester trip which happened last night I wanted to finish this one and get it out.

Last week, Jon and I had a strung out pub crawl in London to take in a few places new to us and two of our favourites. It involved more walking than crawls we normally do but it was worth it.

The Jerusalem Tavern

Jerusalem Tavern, Farringdon

We started at the Jerusalem Tavern in Clerkenwell – surely a favourite of all real ale drinkers in London.

If you’re not familiar with the Jerusalem Tavern it’s a traditionally traditional pub. Lots of wood – walls, benches, chairs, and no carpets. The pub is the London outlet for the Suffolk-based St Peters Brewery and there are usually 4 or 5 draught beers on from their range. There are no handpumps, the beers served from taps in pretend barrels on the back wall of the bar. I’ve no idea how the beer is dispensed then – an electric pump? (The Hoop & Grapes in Aldgate used to have a similar set up.)

I think the Jerusalem Tavern also carries the whole range of St Peters bottled beers too.

We had a lot to get through so quickly moved on to the next one.

Read my review of the Jerusalem Tavern here.

The Peasant

At 240 St John Street the Peasant is a cavernous old pub with a mosaic tiled floor and enormous windows. If you read the Beer in the Evening reviews you could be easily put off going here, but I’m glad we did. The pub had a friendly, laid back atmosphere and good beer. I’ll come back for longer next time.

The Charles Lamb

The Charles Lamb at Angel - Exterior

Our next stop was the Charles Lamb just round the corner from Angel tube (at 16 Elia Street). We liked it here and the Dark Star Hophead was superb.

The Charles Lamb is reviewed glowingly at Boak and Bailey’s beer blog – a review which prompted me to want to go. The pub was very busy for a Monday night with a good atmosphere, and good food.

Read a more recent pub review of Charles Lamb here.

After this we headed off down City Road to an old favourite.

The Wenlock Arms

Another pub that you hope never changes. Visiting the Wenlock Arms (26 Wenlock Road) is a real ale dream come true. There must be at least 8 handpumps and the beers are always tip top.

The Old Fountain

Our final stop on the evening was the Old Fountain (3 Baldwin Street) close to Old Street tube station. By the time we got there it was dark and I was feeling a bit tired so I don’t really remember much about the pub other than the very impressive beer selection. I can’t remember what I had but I do remember that is tasted good. Jon’s pint was alright too – whatever it was.

We’ll definitely come back here again. A good pub to combine with the Wenlock and the nearby Artillery Arms for a more compact evening’s drinking.
