Enormous Wetherspoon’s/Lloyds No 1 close to Newcastle Central station.
The pub has an old exterior but has been extensively modernised inside.
I guess being in the city centre and close to the station the Mile Castle has quite a mixed clientele – students right through to the elderly.
On the ground floor bar there are 10 hand pumps with 7 real ales and 3 ciders. Some of the selection is standard Wetherspoon’s but there is some focus on local beers. On my last visit Auld Hemp tasted well kept, and reasonably priced at £2 per pint.
There are two other levels to the pub – accessed from the staircase at the main entrance.
The Mile Castle opens for breakfast from 8am – bar is licensed from 10:00 I believe. There is evidence of disco equipment at one end, so I’m guessing it closes late.
Standard Wetherspoon’s food is available but I haven’t eaten here.
Overall the pub is pleasant, but the atmosphere is a little sterile.
