Kings Manor, Newcastle

Kings Manor, Newcastle

The King Manor can be found slightly outside the eastern end of the city centre – close to Northumbria University and Manors metro station.

It’s a basic street-corner pub with a locals feel but it is also opposite Northumbria University so expect students too. The main bar is quite large and open with a wooden floor and wall panneling. But there is a snug bar on the left as you come through the door that’s more homely. The King Manor was pretty empty on my last visit but maybe it comes into its own later in the evenings.

The pub is the Hadrian and Borders brewery tap and features a good selection of their beers. The Needles and Pins was pretty good on my last visit, but unfortunately I was a bit short of time to enjoy any of the others.

There is no food. There are many TVs showing music videos.

Practically next door to the New Bridge.

I’m hoping that someone will see this email, even if the Pub is closed. My great-grandfather was Joe Wilson of Newcastle, the singer, songwriter 1841-1875, who was a landlord of the establishment then known as Joe’s Pub for a period of time. I hope to come to Newcastle next year with family members for a sort of pilgrimage to his birth place, his gravesite in Old Jesmond Cemetery, and perhaps find some Wilsons who may have a connection with us. I do hope the King’s Manor will be open…it’s a landmark place. Could you let me know please? Thank you. Kasandra Van Keith in Halifax Nova Scotia. kasa_keith@hotmail.com
