The Centurion Bar, Newcastle

The Centurion Bar, Newcastle

Cavernous and ornate bar attached to the Central Station in Newcastle.

The Centurion is effectively part of the station and it is possible to exit straight onto the station platforms. Outside the other is the main cab rank for the station – so watch how you cross the road.

The first thing that strikes you as you enter the pub are the breathtaking ceramic tiles that cover the wall. Apparently the Centurion used to be the first class waiting room in the past, but was subsequently converted into more mundane offices when having grand station fittings was not the British Rail way. Apparently the tiles are valued at over £4 million – and it’s best to admire them during daylight hours as the light can be a bit gloomy inside at night.

The long bar is on the right hand side as you enter from the cab rank. The real ales are hidden at one end. But although they seem overlooked, the quality of the beers on offer is very good and the pub justifies it’s position in the Good Beer Guide. There are 5 hand pumps altogether and Black Sheep Bitter and Caledonian Deuchars IPA are regulars I’m told. The remaining handpumps are taken up with guests. During my last visit to Newcastle the Jarrow Rivet Catcher was superb.

Food is available but I didn’t eat here.

My only gripe about the pub is that amongst all the beauty of this awesome structure, there are masses of TV screens showing whatever the current sporting fixture is. Quiet conversation is not always easy when a big football match is on. I did subsequently discover that there is a snug bar that is a bit quieter – maybe next time.

But it’s a fantastic place to wait for your train – almost worth getting to the station early for.
