Not for the first time my visit to the Plough in Horsell has coincided with their regular quiz evening – every Wednesday at the moment. The quiz MC relies on his voice rather than a PA to project his questions and answers to the crowds in the pub. These quizzes are popular and the only seats available when we arrived were at the bar.
The pub is on the south side of Horsell common and can be quite hard to find if you don’t know it’s there. This probably accounts for the noticeable ‘locals’ feel to the pub – but in the friendly sense. The bar staff were quick and efficient but with a human touch too.
The atmosphere in the one room available is welcoming even though it’s mainly a locals pub. Food is available every day and the specials change on a daily basis.
Beer quality from the 5 handpumps seems to be good these days after some wobbles in the past. The choice is made up of some standards plus a variety of guests – the Brains Bread of Heaven I had on my last visit was very good.
The garden is a pleasant sun trap and there are some bits of play equipment for your younger kids in the shade.
