Large and busy Nicholson’s pub very close to the Savoy Hotel.
The ground floor has a traditional feel with some interesting features. There’s a balcony area at the back which is a good way to view some of the interesting features and generally take in the atmosphere.
The clientele contains a mix of people – office workers and a fair proportion of tourists.
There is also a cellar bar at the Coal Hole but I haven’t been down to it.
Beer selection is varied – reflecting Nicholson’s commitment to real ales. The Oakleaf Hole Hearted I had on a recent visit tasted very good.
Food is available at the Coal Hole but I’ve not eaten here. I saw a couple of meals delivered to nearby tables and the food looked good and the portions were large.
The Coal Hole used to have a poor reputation but it’s massively improved and I like it. I slightly favour the Wellington just up the road (another Nicholson’s pub) but the Coal Hole is worth a try.
