The Old Vine can be found at the north-western corner of the cathedral grounds – close to the Eclipse pub and the centre of Winchester.

A few years ago the Old Vine used to be a scruffy chain pub that only really attracted visitors to the city who didn’t know where the better places were. But a couple of years ago it reinvented itself as a much more attractive food and drink venue.

As you enter through the main door there is a large restaurant area through the curtain to the left. On the right however is a more pubby bar with seating area where you can just go for a drink. Behind the bar area there is a small courtyard patio – perfect for summer evenings.

The selection of real ales seems to vary over my occasional visits to the Old Vine, but the beers always seem to be kept well. On my last visit to Winchester, the Bowmans Swift One was the best beer of the evening.

I’ve never eaten at the Old Vine but I’m guessing it’s pretty good as it always seems necessary to book a table to get in.

Definitely one of the better bars in Winchester.
