Eclipse
25 The Square, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9EX – 01962 865676
The Eclipse is a tiny city-centre pub opposite the Winchester museum and the cathedral.
On sunny days the pub can be deserted as all the customers are seated outside on the pavement. This cafe style give the pub a friendly feel but it must get crowded inside when the weather is not so kind.
3 or 4 real ales are available – 2 Ringwood selections plus Flowers Original on my last visit but the beer didn’t seem to taste brilliant. The Eclipse has been in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for some years now but as of the 2011 edition it is no longer included.
Given the small size of the pub it’s not surprising that food is not available.
In my view the atmosphere is better here at the Eclipse, but the beer is better quality at the nearby Old Vine.
