Historic pub/hotel at the mouth of the Exeter Ship Canal. Only open in the warmer months of the year (easter onwards I believe) and accessible only on foot or by bicycle down the towpath or up the river from Starcross. The Turf Hotel can also be reached by ferry from Topsham. The nearest car park is several hundred yards away.
Still, if you’ve ascertained it’s open then it’s definitely worth a visit for good food and fine beers. There is a large garden between the river and the canal with fine views. There is a children’s play area as well.
At times, there is an outside bar available which saves queueing up inside. I believe the outside bar does carry real ale.
Inside the pub has a spacious feel even though it’s not really that big. Large wooden tables and big windows make it very attractive.
Now that the Exe Estuary Cycle Trail has fully opened, the pub can get very popular at lunchtimes and it’s really worth booking ahead if you want to guarantee a table.
