New Mobile Version Has Arrived

In October I posted about my unhappiness with the mobile version of Good Beer, Good Pubs that I had been using for some months. Whilst the plugin that I had used was versatile and easy to setup I didn’t like the appearance and it was hard to fully control which bits of the site were visible.

The new mobile version

Well at last I’m pleased to tell you that the new mobile version has arrived. For the benefit of your mobile bandwidth I decided to strip out most of the frills from the site and focus on just the text with very simple styling.

The content of the page is close to the top just under the list of the main navigation links and the search box. All the other reference links are under the content.

If you’re browsing to the site using a mobile the site should spot that and automatically switch you to the mobile version. This switching can never be 100% perfect so there is a link at the top of each page to switch to the other version – mobile or desktop as appropriate.

Mobile Version Revisited

Back in the late spring I blogged about introducing a mobile friendly version of the Good Beer Good Pubs site. This mobile version was provided by using a plugin for WordPress – the content system that drives the site. Recently I’ve been checking the stats and I can see that although the numbers vary, something like 15% of users of this site access it from what the system thinks is a mobile device.

But I’m not happy.

The plugin was easy to install and set up, but it can make getting to some parts of the site harder. And the search box is not available – something I can see that many of you use to find your way around. I’d also like to have more flexibility and control over the look and feel.

So Coolfields Consulting who set up the site are going to provide a different mobile friendly version that does all the things I want. We’ll start working on this very soon.

Mobile Version of Good Beer, Good Pubs

Good Beer, Good Pubs is trying out a mobile version for those of you (and me) who need information on the move. And I’d really appreciate you telling me what you think, and whether it works for you.

The mobile version is provided by using a tool called WordPress Mobile Pack. It works automatically by trying to detect if you’re using a mobile to access the site. So there’s no separate url to remember. And if it guesses wrongly, there’s always a link to allow you to swap between the versions.

I’m using it now to post this and it seems ok so far. But please leave some comments to let me know what you think.
