The Harp, Covent Garden

The Harp – a fine real ale pub in Covent Garden is currently holding a photo competition to get some good pics for their new website. It runs until the end of April 2010

Anyone can enter and there are prizes for the best photos. You can find out more and register at the Harp’s temporary website.

They’re organising a photo party on Wednesday 21st April from 6pm to allow photographers to get some good pics when the pub is busy.

Maybe I’ll see you there.

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Hackney in north-east London isn’t my normal stomping ground, but I was recently in that area for a business meeting and stumbled upon the Pembury Tavern.

The Pembury Tavern is close to Hackney Downs railway station on a busy crossroads. My visit coincided with the start of the rush hour, and the traffic outside was getting nowhere fast.

The outside of the pub is impressive but looks grey on a grey winter’s day. But the inside is open and welcoming despite being sparsely decorated.

Purity Ubu in London

Over the last couple of years I’ve been in Warwickshire on occasions, and have enjoyed a few pints of Ubu from the Purity Brewery. But now this gorgeous pint is regularly available in london too – at the Roebuck on Great Dover Street in Borough.

The Roebuck is about 400 yds from Borough tube station but is worth the walk, and makes a worthy addition to any real ale pub crawl in the London Bridge/Borough area.

It’s actually not far from the Royal Oak in Tabard Street and having walked from one to the other I’d say the pubs were very different. The Roebuck is much darker inside and there is actually music playing.

Party at the Dispensary, Aldgate

I’ve written about the Dispensary in Aldgate before in my Aldgate lunchtime series. But on Friday 20th November I left my last job and had my leaving party there. The turnout was very good as you can see from this picture.

My Leaving Party

Annie, who runs the Dispensary, always keeps the beer well and I was sustained for the evening by pints of Dark Star Hophead and Harvey’s Best. I didn’t try the Itchen Valley Gold or the Dark Star Porter but I’m told they were good too.

If you are ever in the Aldgate area I do recommend the Dispensary for a fine pint – it’s a bit cheaper than some pubs around as well. They put out complimentary nibbles on a Friday evening too.

A Tale of Two Wetherspoons

Nov 7th, 2009 | Author: The Beeralist

I recently visited two Wetherspoons pubs in the Tower Hill area in London – both on the same day. The two pubs are actually quite close to each other and the experience showed the contrast between good and not-so-good in the same chain.
