Recently I helped the Harp pub in Covent Garden with their photo competition. The aim of the competition was to have a bit of fun and get some great pictures for the new Harp website which was launched recently.

Snacks in Fuller’s Pubs

Jul 1st, 2010 | Author: The Beeralist

I recently had a business meeting in Hammersmith in West London and afterwards I was able to visit a few of the pubs in that area that I hadn’t been to for a while. The first two pubs – the Dove and the Salutation were Fuller’s pubs and although I didn’t stay long in either, I was a little peckish and so asked for a bag of salted peanuts.

The Harp, Covent Garden

The Harp – a fine real ale pub in Covent Garden is currently holding a photo competition to get some good pics for their new website. It runs until the end of April 2010

Anyone can enter and there are prizes for the best photos. You can find out more and register at the Harp’s temporary website.

They’re organising a photo party on Wednesday 21st April from 6pm to allow photographers to get some good pics when the pub is busy.

Maybe I’ll see you there.

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Hackney in north-east London isn’t my normal stomping ground, but I was recently in that area for a business meeting and stumbled upon the Pembury Tavern.

The Pembury Tavern is close to Hackney Downs railway station on a busy crossroads. My visit coincided with the start of the rush hour, and the traffic outside was getting nowhere fast.

The outside of the pub is impressive but looks grey on a grey winter’s day. But the inside is open and welcoming despite being sparsely decorated.

There are 16 handpumps on the bar – mostly serving beer from the Milton Brewery. Apparently they are located on the outskirts of Cambridge but I must admit I’d never heard of them before. As well as the Milton beers there were a couple from the Milestone Brewery and one or two others, as well as at least one real cider.

On my visit I had two pints. Firstly the Milton Sparta – a hoppy beer in the Hophead spectrum, but nowhere near as lively.

The second pint was Milton Nero – a dark and complex stout. It tasted thick and oaty with some significant sweetness. I don’t think I could drink much than a pint of that one.

Other attractions in the pub include a pool table and a bar-billiards table. One end of the pub seems to be like an office – many people using their laptops. There is a wi-fi hotspot which I believe is free.

My visit was relatively brief, but it’s enough to convince me I should come back for longer. With the trains into Liverpool Street so close and frequent it’s certainly easy to get to.

Beer Festival at the Pembury Tavern

Beer Festival at the Pembury Tavern

Since I first drafted this post a couple of weeks ago I have been back to the Pembury Tavern again on March 10th – once again for a brief visit. There is currently a beer festival on – with a rack of casks set up opposite the bar. I think there were another 8 beers on with a couple of real ciders too. I tried the Skinners Spriggan which was very good.

I think the beer festival runs until Sunday 14th March.

The Pembury Tavern has its own website.

Purity Ubu in London

Over the last couple of years I’ve been in Warwickshire on occasions, and have enjoyed a few pints of Ubu from the Purity Brewery. But now this gorgeous pint is regularly available in london too – at the Roebuck on Great Dover Street in Borough.

The Roebuck is about 400 yds from Borough tube station but is worth the walk, and makes a worthy addition to any real ale pub crawl in the London Bridge/Borough area.

It’s actually not far from the Royal Oak in Tabard Street and having walked from one to the other I’d say the pubs were very different. The Roebuck is much darker inside and there is actually music playing.

The Ubu itself is much hoppier than anything that Harvey’s brew but it’s not in the same league as Hophead from Dark Star.

Having enjoyed Purity Gold a few times in the past at the Hole in the Wall at Waterloo, I’ll be making a few more detours down Great Dover Street when in the Borough area to sample Ubu on draught.

Aside No 1:
I have been enjoying Ubu in bottles recently from Sainsbury’s, but the draught is much nicer.

Aside No 2:
I see from the latest Wetherspoons beer list that Ubu will be featuring at some point during the winter months, but of course it’s not certain when.
