Morrisons Beer Offers – July 2010 Update
Jul 26th, 2010 |
This month’s Morrison’s bottled beer research was done in the store at Wokingham in Berkshire for a change.
Amazingly after my comments from last month the Wyre Piddle “Piddle in the Hole” no longer seems to be on the shelves at any price. I’m sure it’ll return though.
Two beers are priced at £1.00 this month: Firstly the J W Lees “Brewer’s Dark” I mentioned last month – a delicious dark brown ale.
Joining it this month is Shepherd Neame “Spitfire” – a popular bitter from the Kentish brewery. I’m not a big fan of Shep’s beers but I know they are popular with many. Certainly many in Wokingham as there were none left on the shelf.

Odd Wheel Wembury Update
Jul 14th, 2010 |
You may have read on my review of the Odd Wheel at Wembury in Devon that the pub was closed and was listed as for sale by a company called Bettesworths.
I’ve just noticed that the marker on the Bettesworths website has moved from ‘Under Offer’ to ‘Sold’. Does anyone out there have any more information? Is it going to reopen?
This used to be a great pub with a superb selection of real ales and good food. It would be a great shame if it was closed for good.
St Albans Pub Crawl
Jul 7th, 2010 |
Last Saturday I enjoyed a great day with friends visiting some fine real ale pubs in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
St Albans is a very old city and apparently once had the highest density of pubs per head of population of any location in the UK. I’ve no idea whether that’s still the case but there are are certainly plenty of pubs still around and many of them seem to be thriving.
Our pub agenda was set using some local inside knowledge (friends who live in St Albans), the Good Beer Guide and of course the Beer in the Evening website.
Here’s a brief round up of the ones we got to. Fuller reviews of each of the pubs will be added to the reviews section soon.

Snacks in Fuller’s Pubs
Jul 1st, 2010 |
I recently had a business meeting in Hammersmith in West London and afterwards I was able to visit a few of the pubs in that area that I hadn’t been to for a while. The first two pubs – the Dove and the Salutation were Fuller’s pubs and although I didn’t stay long in either, I was a little peckish and so asked for a bag of salted peanuts.
